The school originated in 1847 when a site was given by Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby and the cost of buildings "defrayed by the churchmen of the Parish and neighbourhood". Compton & Up Marden CE School is a Church of England "Controlled" School and one of its governors is chosen by the Diocese. The building the school now occupies on its present site was built in 1963 and comprises, with new ancillary accommodation built in 2000, entrance hall, foyer and library area; staffroom; main office/reception; headteacher's office; three classrooms; cloakroom and toilet facilities. There is also a "mobile" classroom comprising the fourth classroom, cloakroom,.and toilet facilities, which was added to the premises in 1995. There is a hard surfaced play area and a large terraced field. The school is in an idyllic setting, the surrounding countryside being designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. Plans are being prepared to develop the site further to maximise the potential of our beautiful site.
